Korsmo recently placed the finishing touches on Meriwether Elementary School, located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The school will house grades K-5 and serve approximately 450 students. Constructed with structural steel, concrete masonry unit blocking and exterior brick and acrylic plaster, the building is designed to fit JBLM’s building and safety requirements.
The school has large common areas with high ceilings, custom wall murals, terrazzo flooring and transaction countertops. The classrooms and library utilize natural lighting, which helps improve the learning environment. The gymnasium has beautiful white hardwood maple floors, and the outdoor play area features covered basketball courts, custom designed play structure and a full baseball field and track.
Meriwether Elementary was completed under the same contract as Rainier Elementary, another Clover Park school located on JBLM. Although the schools have very similar structural layouts, the interior design is unique to each school. For example, blue and green walls, curved lines and rounded fixtures give Meriwether Elementary an oceanic theme.
The project was completed two weeks early, and teachers were able to move into their new classrooms mid-August to prepare for the 2014-2015 school year.
