The new Downing Elementary School for Tacoma Public Schools opened in time for the start of school in September 2022. The 56,000-square-foot, two-story building provides dynamic indoor and outdoor learning for 450 students.
Korsmo Construction worked with TCF Architecture to deliver the Downing Elementary School replacement project through the progressive design-build method. The new building was constructed on the same property as the existing school that was fully occupied and operational during construction.
In addition to dynamic learning environments, the new school provides engaging transitions between interior spaces through color identifiers, visual connections, and abundant natural light. Connections to outdoor learning spaces promote collaboration and a healthy teaching and learning environment. Flexible learning spaces accommodate changes in educational program needs while maintaining clean sight lines for a safe and secure facility that is easy to maintain.
Downing Elementary was built adjacent to the existing Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound facility that was renovated as part of the project. The new club has dedicated program spaces, including a teen center, and access to shared spaces, such as Downing’s gymnasium and kitchen. The club provides convenient before and after school care for students in the community.
