The Mustard Seed Village opened in November 2022 after a long wait for the first assisted living option of its kind on the Key Peninsula.
The Village is a nurturing environment made of three connected longhouse-style homes, including two dedicated for assisted living and one for memory care. Each home has 10 studio apartments and common areas, including an open-hearth area, kitchen, and dining room. Staff are available on site 24 hours per day to provide support and assistance with activities of daily living. Unlike a nursing home, residents receive services as needed or requested to encourage an independent lifestyle.
The Village incorporates a “greenhouse model” assisted-living home, where residents each have a private studio and bathroom; share a central living space with an open kitchen, dining, and living room, and access to outdoor space. There is a salon in one of the homes that is available to all residents, shared pathways, and community gardens. Outdoor recreation amenities are also planned.
The building was designed to reflect a large cedar home that blends in with the landscape. The entry porches are supported by 10-foot by 10-foot clear-coated Alaskan yellow cedar posts and beams that will weather naturally over time.
While the project faced several challenges, including funding delays, winter weather conditions, and unsuitable soil mitigation, it took the Korsmo team only 10 weeks from the beginning of framing to complete the roof dry-in.
