This design-build project constructed a new 23,000-square-foot, two-story acoustical research laboratory and 4,200-square-foot shop building and service pier for the Carderock Naval Surface Warfare Division at Naval Base Kitsap- Bangor. The main building houses research labs, offices, open workstations, conference rooms, kitchen and dining areas, restrooms/locker rooms, and a container cargo receiving area. Several rooms are constructed to meet Sensitive Compartmentalized Information Facility guidelines.
The steel-framed structure is set on a concrete pad and features metal siding and pitched standing-seam roof, exterior cladding, overhead coiling doors, windows that meet anti-terrorism/force protection and code egress guidelines, gypsum wall board systems with acoustics coating, rolling partitions to separate conference rooms, enhanced security system with key card access, passenger elevator, and full mechanical and electrical systems to meet conformance code and LEED eligibility criteria.
Situated on the pier, the 4,200-square-foot ship services and support building houses a shop and welding area on a pontoon. Construction included structural steel, fireproofing, metal siding, a standing-seam sloping metal roof, a roll-up door for forklift access, insulation, electrical system, and heating and ventilation for moisture protection.
Although this project was not registered with the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED certification, the Korsmo team was able to provide documentation to achieve a LEED Silver rating.
